Winter Wellness!
The immune system is the body's own intricate defense mechanism against infectious organisms and foreign invaders. Through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms (bugs) and substances that invade body systems and cause disease. The immune system is complex and made up of a network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to protect the body. The cells involved in this defense are referred to as white blood cells which come in two basic types that combine to identify and eliminate disease-causing organisms or substances.
These white blood cells circulate through the body between the organs and your lymphatic system and blood vessels. In this way, the immune system works in a co-ordinate manner to scan the body for germs or substances that might cause problems. It is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that have a natural propensity to invade your body.
These invasions have the tendency to occur more frequently during winter since winter suppresses our immune system and we tend to spend a lot of our time indoors and close to people, breathing each other’s germ-loaded air.
The two basic types of white blood cells are:
1. phagocytes, cells that chew up any invading organism
2. lymphocytes, the memory cells that recognize previous invaders and help the body eliminate them
So the Natural way to not falling victim to colds and flu is to proactively stimulate and boost your own immune system and eliminate germs throughout winter!
Be sure to boost your immune system this winter with the following well-researched and natural anti-viral, anti-bacterial and immune boosting nutrients and herbs:
- Vitamin C
Vitamin C tops our list of immune boosters for many reasons. It has powerful antioxidant properties to assist the body in building up its own defenses, especially when a cold or flu hits. It has been researched more extensively than any other nutrient known and supports the immune system in a unique way by increasing the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies.
Should you develop a cold or flu, continue with Vitamin C as it may halve the severity and duration of your sick spell. Acerola Cherry, Brocolli extracts and Rosehip are unique and supreme forms of Vitamin C as they have superior bioavailability and absorption potential.
- Elderberry - Has potent anti-viral properties and reduces phlegm.
- Echinacea - It’s known to stimulate different aspects of the immune system, making it a favoured immune booster in many households throughout South Africa. Echinacea has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-microbial effects and is often used to prevent and decrease the duration of the common cold.
- Garlic - Fresh garlic has excellent immune-stimulating properties for infections, and is great for the common cold. Consume it raw or have it in a drink of hot water with a teaspoon of organic honey within 10 minutes of cutting up the garlic. It has potent anti-microbial, anti-helmintic (good for worms), anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-fungal and expectorant properties. The latter makes it great for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, influenza, bronchitis, whooping cough and clearing excess mucous.
- Colostrum - It is famous for its historic reputation in helping the body fight colds and infection and to stimulate the immune system. It is a source of natural antibodies which fights off bacteria and even yeasts. Colostrum stimulates anti-inflammatory properties as well as potent antioxidant activity.
- Propolis - Propolis is a natural antibiotic, is especially rich in amino acids and is important for immune system function. Because of its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, this precious substance has been used as a healing agent for many centuries. It has the ability to provide protection against infectious invaders, promote healing and regeneration of tissue, and provides a superior source of energy and stamina.
- Zinc - Zinc bolsters the immune system to fight colds and other common infections. Being one of the most important nutrients for a healthy immune system, zinc is a vital ingredient in a number of enzymes essential to a healthy immune response. It has been shown to increase the activity of natural killer cells and to boost the production of antibodies in response to infections.
- N-acetyl-cysteien - This amino acid promotes the activation of white blood cells in the respiratory tract, increases your body’s own antioxidant activity and assists the body to thin and drain phlegm.
- Probiotics - Probiotics play an essential part in keeping your digestive tract healthy, thus having a beneficial effect on your immune system. Probiotics may be found in dietary supplements or as a nutritional ingredient in yogurt and other foods. Research supports the use of probiotics for reducing the symptoms and duration of the common cold.
- Vitamin D3 - Vitamin D3 alleviates winter depression whilst bolstering your immune system.
- Beta-carotenoids - Beta carotene increases the number of infection-fighting cells, natural killer cells and helper T-cells, while also being a powerful antioxidant that mops up excess free radicals. The body converts beta carotene to vitamin A which has anti-cancer properties, immune-boosting functions and helps to heal mucus membranes.
- Colloidal Silver - Colloidal Silver is a natural anti-microbial, viricide, bactericide, fungicide and disinfectant to remedy sore throats and colds. It has potent immune boosting effects which have been documented over centuries.
